Artist's Description
This painting is inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's "The Painter on His Way to Work," completed in 1888 while he lived in Arles, France. He died one year later. I made sure to keep plenty of his favorite color, yellow, in this whimsical, lighthearted celebration of his painting. It is created with many impasto effects, since he applied paint lavishly.
"Paintings have a life of their own that derives from the painter's soul." -Vincent Van Gogh
My second novel in the Painter Place Saga, Hugo, explores many facets of Vincent's life as Caroline is forced to leave the island in South Carolina after Hurricane Hugo in 1989. She spends 5 weeks in Arles, France, during the 100th Anniversary celebration there for the few years Vincent lived and painted in the city. As an artist herself, Caroline will travel to 3 sites from Vincent's paintings and paint plein air as he did.
