When I came upon this view on a tour of historic Heyward House in Bluffton, SC, I stopped still, enchanted. Something about the contrast of worn, rusted, enduring old metal in the embrace of a spreading azalea, blooming with fresh, incredibly soft flowers that would fade in only a few days, made me want to reach for my painting supplies. My imagination took me back in time, picturing the progression of owners and servants who had relied on the faithful service of this source of water since the old Carolina Farmhouse was built in 1841 as a summer place. While there is now no old rusty pail waiting for water, how many people, and how many times, had the old pump served up refreshing water for those who lived there and their guests?
A few weeks ago, I planned another visit to Heyward House for the Plein Air Painters of the LowCountry. Like most of my outdoor painting trips, I mostly took a few reference photos and then settled down to paint a watercolor pen and ink work in my water...
