Description
What is it about white sails against a coastal blue sky that takes our breath away and awakens our sense of adventure? I love to see the sailboats from the bridges as I cross the water onto Hilton Head Island! I love the sight of them anchored just off the 18th hole at Harbourtown during the RBC Tournament, too.
This small painting could be a sight to enjoy here in the LowCountry, but it began as a plein air painting in Wrightsville Beach, NC. The back of this stretched linen canvas is stamped to prove that it was officially elegible in the Wilmington Plein Air Painting event of 2017, but due to high winds and threat of storms, I remained close to Wrightsville Beach on the day I started it. My host at Hummingbird Cottage Airb&b took me just across the bridge from the beach to see Harbor Island, where she grew up, Though I set up to paint under an oak in a small park by the Harbor, working was a struggle in the gusting wind, and the sailboats anchored in the harbor were constantly in motion. I couldn't get the rigging or perspective correct on the boats, so I finally gave up and just took photos with them in various positions. A former sea captain came by, walking his dog, and told me that not only was the wind affecting the boats, but the current as the tide went out did, too.
A local history museum volunteer who'd grown up on the island also stopped by to chat, and we exchanged contact information, for I really found the history of the Lumina on Wrightsville Beach to be intriguing romantic subject matter for a future novel. In the end, I had wonderful conversations, but came home with an unfinished painting. Now, it's ready to leave my studio to delight a collector!
